About this deal

The Keen Targhee III Mid Waterproof is a more stable hiking boot than the X Ultra 3 GTX. It has a stronger construction and can withstand rough terrain better.

As we walked in the wide version of these Gore-Tex boots on the Bryce Canyon’s Rim Trail, they proved supportive, and there were only a few sections of the path where they struggled to maintain traction. Top-notch build quality: The X Ultra 3 Mid is showing very little wear after well over a year of consistent use. One area where it falls short in performance is breathability. The Gore-Tex membrane, although excellent at keeping water out, can also trap heat and perspiration inside the boot, leading to discomfort and foot odor. From our experience, all waterproof boots with GTX lose a part of their breathability, and this model isn’t an exception. The exterior of the upper's materials is treated with an additional waterproofing treatment to help keep shedding water off (even though there is an included Gore-Tex membrane, it won't work as well if the exterior material is wetted through). This treatment will wear off over time, requiring you to respray it on an annual basis to ensure that it keeps repelling water the same way that it did when the boots were brand new. Should You Buy the Salomon Quest 4 Gore-Tex? I’d love there to be a bit more thought to breathability and weight, but these are small things in comparison to what this shoe gets right. Complete lab-specs overview In practice, there was definitely a noticeable level of control through the ankle. This is the main reason I would still recommend these for longer hikes and you’re less likely to roll your ankle thanks to this. Salomon lacing that works well if it works for you The Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX is an excellent hiking shoe, I’d put it as an industry leader and probably a better all-rounder than the newer X Ultra 4 GTX. My favorite part of the shoe is the insanely good grip that helps you feel secure throughout any hike. Moreover, the well-thought-out midsole with Salomon's advanced chassis helps you stay comfortable and safe. For the first part of the hike, this great boot was airy enough, allowing perspiration to go through its membrane pretty well.

In our Hereford shop we offer a professional boot fitting service where we assess your feet, find a selection of boots that match you foot shape and most importantly we make sure that they are comfortable. This iseasy to do in the shop, where we have access tothe right tools, the option of letting you try on as many styles as you like and a knowledgeable member of staff that cancommunicate directly with you regarding your needs. The Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX has a fantastic midsole, made of dual-density material. One softer foam and harder plastic.Although there was a small decrease in stability due to the lightweight design, this hiking footwear felt comfortable and light on the trail, reducing foot tiredness considerably.

However, if you have flat feet or high arches, you may need to add an additional insole for more support. How It Evolved? We also found the toe box to have just the right width – not too narrow to make your feet scream after half an hour of hiking, but also not too wide to give you blisters. The X Ultra 3 Mid GTX hiking boot is the newer version of the X Ultra 2 Mid GTX, and it comes with small but noticeable upgrades. The cushioning on the Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX is highly effective in reducing impact and providing support to the feet.Another area where the boot may not perform ideally is durability. While the boot is built with good synthetic materials that make it super light, it wears out faster than leather. Do We Recommend Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX for Hiking?

I will say, 48 lugs is a pretty large amount of lugs, with mud likely to get caked in between in particularly bad conditions. As I said above, the Advanced Chassis on the X Ultra 3 is excellent for support, but only if it works well with the lacing system. This test will tell you if the shape of the internal heel cup matches your heel to ensure it holds you securely, especially when ascending steep ground. We are trying to eliminate the dreaded heel blister. This hiking boot has a mid-cut design that provides extra support and protection to the ankles, which is crucial when navigating rough terrain. The shoe feels comfortable out of the box, with good ankle support and a soft tongue, designed to keep debris away. Shaving weight often comes at the sacrifice of on-trail comfort, but that’s not the case with the Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX. The Grand Canyon’s Escalante Route was an ideal testing ground, starting with an unrelenting descent of over 4,500 feet. By the end of our first 9-mile day, I had only experienced light soreness, and I wasn’t immediately wanting to remove the boots when we finally got to camp, which is very high praise for a new pair of hiking footwear. In addition, there was very little break-in required. The X Ultra 3 felt far less stiff than Salomon’s own Quest 4 out of the box, although I did wear it on a few day hikes before heading into the Canyon. And the rest of the boot’s testing has gone just as smoothly: I haven’t dealt with any hotspots or notable discomfort throughout a year of use. The Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX weighs in at 13.4oz (380g) in US Men's 10. This is pretty average for hiking shoes, but much lighter than boots. A comfortable, controlled midsole
